Profile's Oct. 22 forum offers insider strategies in evolving employment market
Profile of Santa Cruz, a job search association of experienced professionals, today announced that it will host a public forum entitled “Why Job Hunters Suffer and What To Do About It” by Carmel-based management consultant, trainer and lecturer Tom E. Jones. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at Capitola City Hall, 420 Capitola Ave. It is open to the public at no charge. Seating is limited to 90 participants and is available on a first-come/first-serve basis.
As a “turnaround” specialist and motivational speaker for Fortune 500 companies, Jones has found that struggling organizations usually have a history of hiring the wrong people. He has designed training programs that help companies reverse the trend by enabling them to hire the right people and he will share his insight to audience members who are looking for work. He said that job seekers must change from accomplishment-based employment applications and focus on what they will do for their prospective employer.
“Be interested, not interesting,” Jones said. “Before you interview, get to know a company’s mission and vision statements and the history of the position they wish to fill. Prepare and present a plan that says in the first three weeks on the job, this is how I am going to be a contributor. Rather than sit around waiting to be told what to do, you start showing some initiative. You have become immediately proactive. You have set a precedent, you will get yourself known immediately.”
Jones said that many of the pre-conceptions about finding employment are outdated. Just as the economy resets every 10 years, so do employers and the people who want jobs need to adapt.
“Job hunters will come away from this experience with the realization of what an asset they are to the right employer. I want to show them how to present themselves to employers, who are finding it difficult to find reliable workers,” he said.
Jones offers consulting, executive coaching and keynote presentations on a variety of business related issues through the website Worxinc.com. He is a lecturer at California State University, Monterey Bay, and he has consulted with Fortune 500 companies, public organizations and smaller firms. Jones has authored two award winning books entitled “If It’s Broken, You Can Fix It: Overcoming Dysfunction in The Workplace” and “Help! I’m Surrounded By Idiots: A Workplace Survival Guide.” His latest book, "Doer's Dilemma: Why Achievers Suffer And What To Do About It," is now available in eBook format.
